Paxos is a gorgeous but very small island in the Ionian sea near the island of Corfu. It has 2,500 permanent residents and a secondary school, in which about 80 students attend. Life during the winter is difficult because the ferry service stops when the weather is bad.
On this island for the first time, took place from 9 to 14 April 2013 a film workshop for the students of the school. One quarter of the students attended this workshop.
Children attended an introduction class about the art of cinema and then they were divided into two groups, wrote scenarios and created two short films, the “Basket Roll” of 2.30 minutes and the “Emergency” 5 minutes.
Both films had as central theme, children’s rights. In the first movie, students faced with imagination and humor the disability of their classmate and in the second they highlighted many of the contemporary issues of young people such as social exclusion, bullying but also the acute problem of the blockade of the islands during the days of bad weather.
The workshop was directed by the artistic director of Camera Zizanio Nikos Theodossiou.
On Sunday 14 April was the public showing of the films at the Conference Hall of the Municipal Council of Paxos. The room was full of people and everyone warmly applauded the effort of children.
