Ευρωπαϊκή Συνάντηση Νεανικής Οπτικοακουστικής Δημιουργίας

Season’s greetings to all of you

christmasstory_nt

Dear friends and colleagues,

After the last screenings of the awarded films of Camera Zizanio and Olympia Film Festival at Cine Philip in Athens, on Wednesday, December 17, the events of the 11th International Film Festival for Children and Young People and the 8th Camera Zizanio came to an end.

From my side, I would like to warmly thank those who contributed to the great success of this year’s festival. A festival that surpassed the previous ones in entries, young liveliness and enthusiasm.

First of all I would like to thank those who had traveled from distant countries so that they could be with us at this feast and gave us the chance to create, even for only a week, our own community and to experience its merits. Our friends from Spain, Ireland, England, Italy, Holland, Sweden, Belgium, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine, Lithuania, Jordan.

Also a thanks to those who couldn’t be with us, but with sending their films, making Camera Zizanio the most significant European meeting of young people’s audiovisual creation.

I would like especially to thank our friends from Hungary, Serbia and Holland for running workshops and setting off the creative aspect of the Festival. And also our good collaborators from Greece, Niko Staboulopoulo, Spyro Siaka, Niko Repoulio, Yiorgo Kourmouza, Kosta Katraki, Tasso Zerva, Panagioti Katsiahnia. Because – for yet again another year- they voluntarily passed their knowledge and experience to the children that participated at the workshops, creating all together more than 20 short films

And of course I should thank all those children that participated in the workshops, the Juries and a special thanks to “my children” – the team of Zizanio Live and the Daily news – that carried out a really difficult project.

Unfortunately, before the lights of the festival went out, another event came under the spotlight. As Sophia, a friend and collaborator of the Festival, wrote to her blog, “while our 12-year-old and 15-year-old kids were shooting with their cameras, the same time, others were shooting with a gun a kid of the same age”.

Young people from Greece and other countries are gathering for a rally to protest the murder by policemen of 15-year-old Alexis, on the 6th of December. We stand in solidarity with all the young people who are struggling for a different world, free of violence and with equal opportunities for all.

I wish that the feast days that earmark the end of the calendar year will be happy for all of you. And that the New Year will be the start of a different path to a world more human and creative… in a planet green and peaceful.

The large window to the passions…

(extract from Sophia’s Blog )

And the large window to the passions, the laughter, the ambitions, the pain, the inspiration to the larger world, is still open on the screen of the Appollon Theatre, which, is packed every afternoon till late in the evening, after the last film of the day is screened…

Kids, both from Greece and abroad, sitting or lying on the side aisles, with eyes glued to the screen, ecstatic, watching film after film. Grownups as well, with the same enthusiasm and commitment, all part of what this Festival is, and means.

Farsi, Spanish, Dutch, Greek, Serbian, English, German, Icelandic, French, Arabic, Swedish, the languages you can hear in the seats next to you, but the language of the moving picture, is the same for all… The unanimous laughter with the jokes, the grand intake of breath in the agony of the protagonist, the cries of relief from the kids when everything is resolved, the applause, a whole theatre breathing around you and pulsing to the rythm of each film… The directors, the producers, the creators, sitting next to you, enjoying the impact of their work. Simplay wonderful…

And in the streets, the cinema workshops, kids with cameras creating their own stories, making animations, shadow theatre, the screenings of Camera Zizanio taking place every morning with the European section, and the daily news, capturing the beat of all the Festival’s activities into pixels and sound bits!

And among all these, the kid’s jury watching films, taking down notes, asking questions, voicing opinions, but mostly, having fun… As we all do!

And Roviros Manthoulis, once more left us spellbound with his master class, his words and images of a past that is gone now, unfolding on the large screen… Simply magic… and in his own words:
“Magic is a construct, and in a film you mustn’t be able to see the seams… the director must remain invisible.”

We traveled around the world with excrepts from his films, from the gitanos of Andalucía, to those of Palermo, singing to the Virgin Mary, the “gitana guapa”, to the woman singing a lullaby to put her baby to sleep, as well as the volcano of Aetna, the poem “Thanatos” by Dimitris Christodoulou with the streets under Acropolis of the past…

A unique week for Pyrgos

(extract from Zizanio newspaper, december 4)

The Olympia International Film Festival for Children and young people is already in the middle of its duration, and everything is going as it should. Strange people walking down the streets of Pyrgos, and as you see them, you know that they’re people of the festival. You recognize them, because they are all separated in groups, having cameras and recording everything on their way, asking you for directions and places to go. Everything is great now, but it’s sad to think that everything will be over in a few days. People are going back to their countries full of memories, things to remember and things that make them want to come back next year, for thw 12th Film Festival and thw 9th Camera Zizanio. Pyrgos will be as quiet as it was before and all of us will return to our everyday life, waiting with agony for them to come again, make us feel free from worries and anxiety.
